Vampyre Names

There is a tendency among modern day Kin, which may be viewed as part of the dayside/nightside philosophy: each of us has a shinai (mundane) name, and we take a Vampyre name not only to express our heartfelt inner desire to connect with our inner Vampyre (our nightside), but also to protect our shinai identity (dayside) on chat sites or at community gatherings, or even when meeting with new donors, or even among Kin.

It is part of our self-acceptance process to choose for ourselves the name by which we will become known to the community – a way to come of age, a social rite of passage if you will. In some formal communities Kin are inducted into a social group or circle, and they are introduced by the name they have chosen for themselves.

Most choose their nightside name in dayside tradition, that is – a first and last name, or family name, sometimes including one or more middle names. Some don’t feel the need, but that is a matter of preference.

There are loads of names from ancient cultures that can be applicable to Vampyres. Some in use today in the community are new and unique, from the goth scene or influenced by fiction – or just plainly the result of creativity.

In the list of names follows below, these have been marked as masculine or feminine or as family names. Obviously, these are open to interpretation. If you are newly awakened and in need of a Vampyre name, we hope this helps you.

The same names are often also given to Swans by Vampyres, or adopted by them, although in South Africa the tendency is for some Swans to incorporate the word “Cygnus” (meaning Swan) as a middle name or first part of a double barreled last name, eg Xxx Cygnus-Xxxx. Some clans, orders or Houses or even family groups employ a family or common last name, eg “Acheron Nobis” and “Amaia Nobis”. One current example of this trend in South Africa is House Valur  (eg Octarine Valur, Lilith Rae Valur, Psion Valur De Nocte etc).
